Food Policy Alliance Cymru

Food Policy Alliance Cymru is a coalition of organisations and stakeholders building and promoting a collective vision for the Welsh food system.

Through collaboration, engagement and research the Alliance aims to:

  • Co-produce a vision for a food system in Wales that connects production, supply and consumption and gives equal consideration to the health and wellbeing of people and nature.
  • Advocate for policy change to address climate and ecological emergencies, the public health crisis and the rise in food insecurity.
  • Ensure Wales is linked to UK policy, research opportunities and the broader global system.

In December 2020, Food Policy Alliance Cymru published its collective vision for developing a food system that is unique to Wales and fit for Future Generations.

Food Sense Wales provides Food Policy Alliance Cymru with the Secretariat and also provides the group with Communications support.

In November 2021, Food Sense Wales, on behalf of Food Policy Alliance Cymru, brought together a number of individuals from a range of organisations to take part in a podcast series called Food, Climate, Change?

Presented by Aled Rhys Jones, this new series of podcasts will feature people who work across Wales’ food system, giving them the opportunity to discuss and explore a range of subject areas linked to food and climate change.

The first episode focuses on the supply chain and procurement practices in Wales.  It looks at the current situation and asks whether changing our ways of working can have a positive impact on people’s health, prosperity and on our climate.

The second podcast features Glyn Roberts, President of the Farmer’s’ Union of Wales and his daughter Beca.  Available in both Welsh and English, this episode focuses on the challenges and opportunities of Net Zero targets and explores Glyn and Beca’s hopes and ambitions for their farm and for the industry in general.

Another Welsh language episode is also available that discusses land use in Wales – from nature friendly farming to the Welsh language; and from rural communities, to growing our own food – featuring Rhys Evans, Sustainable Farming Lead for Wales at the Nature Friendly Farming Network and Caryl Haf, Chair of the Wales Federation of Young Farmers Clubs

Food Policy Alliance Cymru has also produced a video explaining more about food systems.  Watch the video here:
